Advertising, Marketing and Money

Wisconsin Standards

G7-12: Make informed judgments about media and products
G7-12: Create and critically evaluate numerical arguments presented in a variety of real-world situations

What is money

Money itself has no value.  It is created by people and it's value is determined by people.  Money is a resource, it is in most cases a limited or sometimes scarce resource.  The value of money is in what it can do for you.  We live in a market economy.  Everything we see and want is marketed or advertised to us in order to get us to use or spend our personal resource of money.

Money can control you or you can control your money.  Learning early and practicing good money management skills will help you to succeed in every area of your life.  Not becoming a victim of high stakes sales or promises of a better life if you purchase a product will allow you to have control over your life and long term financial goals.
Money Game

You are in Control

Every time you purchase something you are voting.  If you buy quality items at a good price then company's will understand that in order to get your hard earned dollars they will have to sell quality at a good price.   If you buy things of less quality then you are saying that quality doesn't matter to you and those items will be supplied as well.

Clothing should not considered disposable.  Clothing can be repaired, maintained and re-purposed.

Food as another example.  Nothing is more personal and important as what we eat and put on the table for our children to eat.  We know that food is directly related to health.  Everyday advertisers bombard you with unhealthy and potentially damaging food choices.  If you buy "junk food" then you are saying to food producers that you do not care that companies are making money at the expense of your health.

If you choose to change the way you buy food and limit waste.  It is estimated that 30% of the food that is produced is thrown away. You can buy quality, healthy and sustainable food from local shops and farmers and keep your local economy healthy.  You are also able to see where the food comes from and develop relationships with shop owners in your community.
